Enabling “Smart Access” on Netscaler 10.5

Netscaler release 10.5 has been received with open arms for its near complete elimination of java from the UI. In addition to the work Citrix has done to optimize the UI by removing java, certain work flows and tasks were reworked to more closely align with the command-line equivalents, which can sometimes pose a problem for an admin seeking to follow outdated screenshots or instructions. To that end, here is a simple walkthrough to enable “SmartAccess” (or basic) mode on Netscaler Gateway in version 10.5 or higher.

clip_image002Navigate to your Netscaler Gateway Virtual servers. On the left, click to expand “Netscaler Gateway” then select Netscaler Gateway

clip_image004Click the VPN virtual server you wish to edit, then click “edit” above. (You may also double-click the virtual sever to open it, as in previous versions).

clip_image006Click the “Pencil” button to edit the “basic settings” section.

clip_image008Click “More” to expand more options. To enable “SmartAccess”, clear the check box for “ICA Only” (Requires Citrix Universal Licenses for each user, be sure to download and install the licenses from Citrix and set max users appropriately). To enable “Basic” mode, check the box for “ICA Only”.

The command line equivalent would be “set vpn vserver <name> –icaonly off” (for SmartAccess, default), or “set vpn vserver <name> -icaonly on” (for what was formerly known as Basic mode).
